This weekend the Ruya Shop is screening the film La Vampire (1945) by Jean Painlevé.

Location: Mutanabbi Street, Baghdad
Time: 10am – 2pm
Date: Friday 11 May – Saturday 12 May

The French naturalist and documentary filmmaker Jean Painlevé captured the natural world as it had never been seen before. Although his films were made for scientific and educational purposes, they were popularised in artistic circles by the Surrealists. La Vampire is an escapade into the Chaco forest, on the borders of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, where a vampire bat lives. In the short film, the vampire bat sucks blood from a guinea pig.
