Each week, Ruya will be sharing a cartoon by Iraqi caricaturist Khudair Alhimyari. This month’s theme is the marshes, which were recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Below, an ordinary man and a cleric hold different magnets in a cartoon called: ”Attracting Tourists”.

Below, the man on the boat tells his friend: “Be careful, this kind of fish needs more experience”, pointing to a fish that has been labelled “tourism”.

Below, the water buffalo, which lives along the marshes has “World Heritage List” written on a label around its neck. The water buffalo’s existence in the marshes was threatened after the latter were drained to less than 10% of their original size by Saddam in the 1990s.

Below, Alhimyari comments on the reaction that clerics in Iraq had to the prospect of the marshes becoming a tourist attraction. In this cartoon, titled “List of World Heritage Sites,” the cleric holds a paper containing “a list of haram and halal” – what is allowed and forbidden by Islam.
